Whether you’re on holidays, heading away for the weekend, or need to run a few errands, hiring a car makes it easy to get around.
There are few options for car hire in Australia. You can go through a car hire agency or a car sharing service like Car Next Door.
With a hire car agency you’ll need to book in advance, and go to the rental car depot to pick up and return the car. Most depots are only open during business hours, and you’ll need to leave a bit of time to do some paperwork at the start and end of your hire. It can also be quite expensive, especially if you want to reduce your cover excess or add an additional driver.
Car Next Door is more flexible than a hire car agency. Once you’ve joined Car Next Door for free, you can book cars instantly with the app. Pick up and return is open from 6am to 11pm, and there are cars available in suburbs right around the country. You can book by the hour or day, with prices starting at $5 an hour and $25 a day, plus distance charges and booking fees. Reducing your excess is much more affordable than with a hire car company, and it’s free to add another driver – just ask your friend to join Car Next Door for free so they’re covered by our damage cover.
With a hire car agency, rates for borrowing a small car average $70-80 a day but are much more expensive during peak periods like school holidays and summer. Reducing your excess could cost over $30 a day, and if you want to share the driving you’ll probably pay an extra fee per day, per driver. You also need to factor in the cost of the fuel you’ll use on your trip. If you’re reducing your excess, you could end up paying well over $100 a day for a small car, and more if you want a medium or large car.
Rates for borrowing cars through Car Next Door start at $5 and hour or $25 a day, plus distance and booking charges. Reducing your excess costs just $1.50 an hour or $18 a day, and it’s free to share the driving. Just ask your friend to join Car Next Door for free so they’re covered by the damage cover.
Both rental car agencies and Car Next Door have a range of cars available from small cars to medium cars and SUVs. Car Next Door has a much larger range of cars to suit all types of trips. There are zippy smart cars, city runabouts, larger cars for extra leg room, Mini Coopers, convertibles and everything in between.
Any driver over the age of 18 can borrow cars, providing that they hold a full license. There are no additional surcharges for younger borrowers. Find our more about car hire for under 21 year olds.
One of the benefits with Car Next Door is that you can hire a car without a credit card - any valid Visa or Mastercard is accepted, whether credit or debit. All payments are automatically managed by our billing system. We'll charge your credit or debit card in two parts; you pay for the time, booking fee and optional excess reduction when you book your trip. After your trip ends, you'll pay for your distance and tolls.
